Halloween Weekend!!! oh and HOMECOMING!!!

| | Comments (0)
Hi Guys,

Another very busy week has gone by since I last wrote. Halloween Weekend coincided with Homecoming Weekend for our sorority. We hosted a homecoming brunch inviting the Tridelta Alumnae. Once it was over I rushed back to my dormitory to prepare pancakes for the Resnik Halloween Brunch. Every floor brought different goodies, turkey bacon, cereal, yogurt and orange juice added to the menu. After the eating and cleaning was done, I rushed off to watch the performance of The Mystery of Edwins Drood, by our action company, Scotch and Soda. It is a spell binding murder mystery that involves the audience in deciding the ending. It was hilarious.

After that I attended a birthday dinner at the Korean Garden Restaurant on Semple Street. The food was great. I then rushed home to take a quick nap (I love naps). I dressed up as a Greek Goddess, my suite mates dressed as a Prom Queen and an 80's Hippie. We had originally wanted to be sexy nuns but had to scrap the idea when we had costume glitches. A couple of friends dressed up as babies. You have to be resourceful and flexible on a budget. Halloween is the time to dig deep into your closet and come out of your shell. The party was great.

The following day was Tridelta Founder's Day. We were invited to lunch with the Tridelta Chapter of the University of Pittsburgh. Tridelta at Allegheny, and the Pittsburgh Alum Chapter. And amazingly I won the raffle basket again for the second year in a row!!! I won movies and candy and fun stuff.

I ran back to the dorm for some homework (yes I do homework occasionally), then off to the Tridelta Crush Party 2009. Once the music started we had a blast dancing up the night. It was great fun to party with our sisters, and especially great to see our new sisters joining in.

On Monday we attended a Pan-Hellenic Event with guest speaker Stacey Nadue. She was one of the six women who were on the TV commercials and publicity campaign for Dove and the "real beauty campaign." She spoke about body image and the unrealistic ideals portrayed in the media. She revealed a very scary statistic, "that in a global study only 2% of women consider themselves beautiful." Wow, that is really sad to hear. We ended the evening with a great discussion. It was a very enlightening and empowering evening for everyone in the House. The Dove Evolution ( MUST WATCH!!!)

This was quite an intense week even by my standards!

Clare is BACK !!!

| | Comments (0)
Hi guys,

I am back. After a busy FMR (formal sorority recruitment), Greek Week, Family Weekend, and Sleeping Bag Weekend....I need a break. Classes are in full swing and final projects are being handed out. The campus is buzzing with school spirit. I have been super busy but am having a great time. This upcoming weekend is Homecoming Weekend. The campus is filled with visiting alumni. Take advantage of all the free events; barbecues at the famous Fence and the annual Homecoming Show. This year Scotch and Soda, the famous CMU production company, is putting on The MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD!

My little Tridelta sister Cassie (Architecture 2014) is working on the sets and costumes. I am so proud of her. Other than that I am looking forward to dressing up for Halloween... Three of us are going as a greek goddess, a prom queen and some one in the 80's.

I would like to send a shout out to the members of my dorm floor at the Resnik Dorms! As I leave you I am working on my application for a summer study abroad program.

Love, Clare

Going GREEK!!!

| | Comments (0)
Going Greek,

So now I am going to bring you up to date with Rush....!!!

During the second week of school means that it is time to think about going "Greek", not as in the Greeks from Greece but about joining a Sorority or Fraternity.  When most people think of Greek life they think of National Lampoon’s Animal House. It is so not like that... Greek life at Carnegie Mellon University is like joining a family.  A family that is based on a shared set of ideals of bettering oneself and the community.  These are ideals that ensure; leadership, philanthropy and community service and sisterhood or brotherhood.

On our campus we have five sororities and ten fraternities.  They are located on campus in individual houses.  Greek members make up about twenty one percent of the Carnegie Mellon community.  Greeks also participate in Greek Sing, Buggy, and Booth.  We raised lots of money during Greek Sing last year and a significant amount as an entire community.  If that is not enough of a reason for you to check out Greek Life, then think about the possibility of hanging out with fellow members who will be there for you no matter what and will be your family away from home.  I love Greek life because of the tradition of sorority life and the bonds and friends I have made. I believe that my choice to become a sorority sister was the best decision I have ever made.  To read more click on my sorority President's article in the Carnegie Mellon University Tartan

Activities Fair

What else is happening on Campus?  Student Activities Fair.  In High School there were only a few dozen clubs to choose from, but here at Carnegie Mellon University we have over one hundred and fifty clubs to choose from.  If you are just starting at CMU, so many choices can be overwhelming.  At Carnegie Mellon University the clubs host a student activities fair.  Here you can meet people from almost every club and join their email lists so that you can keep up with all the latest news.  Plus there is always free food.  It’s great when you are want to experience some extracurricular activities to explore possibilities and to balance the academic courses you are taking.  Have fun searching!!!

First Week....or so...

Hi there…week one is finally over.  What can I say it feels like I have been back for months!!!
This week classes started at Carnegie Mellon. My schedule has me starting early every day.  My coffee maker is on automatic  so I can get the benefit of the caffeine and an extra ten minutes of sleep.  I am not a morning person.
I am really excited about this years, AcaPitt , the accappella group that is putting on a show.  My friend Sarah Grey Hall is organizing it.  It is a philanthropy event with all the acaepella groups of University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University coming together to perform and raise money for music programs for Pittsburgh Public Schools. I am really looking forward to that.   I can’t sing but I am one of Counter Point's (the all female acapella group) biggest fans.  Save the day, October 10th 2009 at 8pm in Rangos at the University Center.
The drama school has already started its rehearsals for this year’s season. The first show will be Grapes of Wrath. There are three dramaturges working on it so come out and support them!!! Got to Go!!!

RA training .... intense!

When I applied to become an Upperclassman RA, I never thought that I was signing up for a life altering experience.

I assumed that I would be spending a few hours responding to unexpected circumstances, hosting floor events, and in general being responsible for the smooth functioning of a floor in the dormitory. I never expected to have so many different and unique experiences just in the first week of my RA training.

I realize how lucky I was to have been chosen to be an RA for the Resnik dormitory, under the leadership of our CA Renee Camerlingo. She has made this week one I will always remember. She is an amazing, considerate and loving person.

All the RA's started this first week of training with some very intense discussions dealing with everything from ethics to politics. We spoke about our personal experiences and shared our reactions to real life situations. Our days were intense with both learning and bonding experiences. We shared food, visited sites around Pittsburgh, and we even went on a bicycling expedition around the waterfront, something I probably never would have done on my own.

I am excited and confident that CMU prepares their RA's carefully and thoughtfully so that they in turn can pass on their confidence and support to the students they will serve. I can't wait for my floor to move in and the semester to begin!

Back on campus for good!!!

Hi Guys!

What a crazy week.  Leaving home, arriving in Pittsburgh dragging my luggage, and then not having a minute to catch my breath.

Over the summer I have been living in our sorority house while I worked as a tour guide. I took a couple of weeks off to visit my family. While I was away I learned that our sorority, Tri Delta, had the opportunity to move up into new and larger facilities, a house on the prestigious Quad, a very big deal. We were so happy with the news.  But everything happened so fast and everyone had to scramble their plans. My sisters had only two weeks to clean up the new place, pack up our house and everything in it.

The day I arrived back in Pittsburgh was the day that everything, from pots to furniture, had to be out of the old place and into the new house. Luckily my sorority sister had packed up my room, and put my stuff into boxes. The timing was not good though because I couldn't move my stuff directly into my new dorm yet, so my stuff was taken to the new sorority house with everything else. That was Wednesday.

And today, Thursday, I was allowed into my new living quarters in the Resnik Dormitory, where I will be the Residential Advisor in the fall. My new room is so great! It has three windows, a real closet, a good size fridge and a microwave. I spent today cleaning things, and tomorrow I can now move all my stuff from the new sorority house, back across the campus into my new dorm room. This is going to be a physically exhausting few days.  But I am really excited to finally have my own room. You won't believe how much stuff you can accumulate after only the first year. Having to lug it across campus you will be amazed.

The work continues tomorrow. Stay tuned for "before" and "after" photos. And very soon the campus will be buzzing with other students moving in. I remember last year when I drove up to the campus with my Mom. I can't believe it was only last year....it feels like a lifetime, so much has happened.

BOAL

| | Comments (0)
Many moons ago, I was in your shoes, attending Pre College for Acting, within the Acting/Musical Theatre Program. When I learned about an after school club called The Boal Group, I was intrigued. The type of acting we did was based on the ideals of Agusto Boal. Only forty seats were available in the program. A small lucky group of students from the many talented in the Pre College Program auditioned and were able to participate in this unique activism theatre ensemble.

The group work on “image pieces” opened my eyes to injustices and humanitarian struggles across the globe. For someone like myself, the new world of expression through movement, using physicality and silent expression, was exciting and inspiring. Taking powerful ideas and expressing them raw and bare without the trappings of sound, voice, elaborate sets and costumes stretched my imagination and creativity.

It also made me learn about myself. I learned real team work. I lost inhibitions I didn’t know I possessed.
So much has happened since last summer. It was an honor to have been asked to return and work with this year’s members of Boal. I hope you feel as I do, that the Boal experience has stretched your horizons and was well worth the hard work you put into the program.

Speaking for myself, I know I am grateful and it feels great to revisit and give something back to the program.

Pre College!!!

Well today is Saturday the 27th of June, Pre-College Opening Day!!! This is when Carnegie Mellon's campus is taken captive by swarms of high school juniors and seniors. I worked all day! Talk about a Saturday starting at 8 AM on the dot. At 8:30 AM I was at sitting at a desk, helping all the people heading into admissions. From 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM intensity. I actually saw a family that I had given a tour to earlier this year... they had decided to come to Pre-College! I ended up giving the 4:30 PM tour; it felt like about two hundred people. We couldn't fit into many of the buildings, so I gave the most of the tour outside. At the last stop more then half of my tour ran away to get dinner. I was so sad. It was definitely interesting to have such a huge group. Have fun in Pre-College lovelies!!
